They'll be at The Aquarium March 10th in Fargo, ND. Check out their site for more upcoming shows. Posters For My New Short Film; SparksDesigner Tommy Sunders and illustrator Irina Levin created these promo posters for the short film I've been working on the last couple of months; Sparks. Sparks is about a lonely car mechanic with a hopelessly romantic imagination, who falls in love with a girl, who's dropped off her car for maintenance. The film is for Tokyo-based clothing company Pherrows, and was made to showcase their spring/summer 2012 clothing line. Sparks drops next week so stay tuned!
The Storyboards of Galaxy Black Robo Viceroy GulmeyerThe Viceroy Gulmeyer video I did to promote the sofubi figures for Star Wars shop, Star Case, had a really cool set of storyboards we used as our guide for the shoot. They were drawn by Irina Levin, a freelance storyboard artist working in Minneapolis that I've collaborated with on several projects. She has an amazing attention to detail and superb sense of form and perspective. And most of all she just gets what I'm trying to do, visually. Her storyboards were also featured in this months Lighting magazine (a mens fashion magazine based out of Tokyo). You can view more of her art at Paper Affinity. When I start on a film, I'm usually pretty nervous that it won't work. Since I'm a visual guy, I won't get comfortable until I see images on paper--they let me know what I want to do might be possible. So here are the boards from the video (which in case you missed it, was featured here). If you compare the final video with the boards, you'll see we made a few changes a long the way.
Special thanks to Travis Kragh, Dan Godar, Ron Farber and Zac Bates for helping on the production and post-production of the piece. PHOTOS: The Strange And Serene World Of Daejeon Expo ParkI'm a huge sucker for nostalgia and things from the past. The Daejeon Expo Park is exactly that. It's an amusement park with pretty much no one around. The buildings are straight out of a past vision of a utopian sci-fi future. And I love it. Two Fun Things From JapanI've been working on two new films for people in Tokyo the past couple of months and would like to share a couple of sneak peeks friends in Japan have shared with me.
FUN #1: Tommy Sunders and Darrien Ellis Burks in Hobby Japan magazine! Both these guys starred in a little promo for shop Star Case in Tokyo for a special figure they released. Tommy is a designer and my coworker at PFD, and Darrien is an actor here in Minneapolis. I shot and directed the spot with help from Art Director Travis Kragh, Assistant Director Dan Godar, and mystery PA Scottie, along with visual FX from Ron Farber. Storyboards done by Irina Levin. Translations by Naomi Asada. Here's the clip from the magazine along with the film:
FUN #2: Will Caesar in Lightning magazine! I also got to write and direct a short film for Pherrow's, a vintage American clothing brand based out of Tokyo. This month they have a preview ad for the film and new clothing line in Lightning magazine. The film, titled Sparks, should be out late February/early March so be on the lookout for that! I worked with wonderful cinematographer Bo Hakala and an amazing crew, which I will go into more detail when the film is released. For now, here's a shot from the magazine which features my coworker Will, who also stars in the film: PHOTOS: Hustlin' Market Places and Lonely UFO Catchers (and other sites in Daejeon)
I promise there will be no barf photos here. Instead, just lots and lots of sights of things I liked and was intrigued by the mostest. Let's start with PHOTOS OF DAEJEON, the city where I stayed. Daejeon is an hour train ride south of Seoul. It has about 1.5 million people. I stayed right in the city, and this was the view from the apartment from which I stayed. Afternoon. Sunset. Night. At night, the city is bright and busy. Dance clubs and restaraunt employees take stacks of paper flyers and toss them into the street (it's cause they're advertising, not littering). These papers makes the city look really, really cool in photos. During the day, it's a pretty normal looking city, with shops and restaraunts and parks. They also have a bunch of UFO catcher machines all around the streets. Almost as common as ve nding machines. Here's the loneliest UFO catcher on the planet. Took the subway to a cool market area, too. Lots of spices and fish and people hustlin' with their shops left and right. I like that.
One of my favorite places was this dessert truck. It was pink and they sold hot cinnamon pancakes. Yum.
More photos from Korea to come!
Sneak Peek of My Trip To Seoul
I raced to the edge in order to grab this shot of Seoul just before the sun disappeared for the night. More to come.
